New Designer: Calla Haynes

When scrolling for new designers to write about, I couldn't resist writing about Calla Haynes. Calla is a Toronto-born, Paris-based fashion designer, who has a lot of experience within the fashion industry, just not under her own name. She studied at Parsons in New York, and then Paris. She had an intern with Oliver Theyskens at Rochas which led her to a four and a half year work placement at Rochas and Nina Ricci. She then travelled around Paris working as a freelance writer for young designers before starting up her own collection.

Her first collection was in Spring 2010, and three years later they are still as new and fresh as when they first came out. In her own words,  "Calla is based on my idea of “relaxed luxury”  – a brand that is unique and crafted, while at the same time easy to wear and modern.  Prints are the major stand out of the collection.  I design them myself  -  they can be described as abstract, romantic, and ‘arty’"

My three favouirte outfits from her Spring/Summer 13 Collection

Her modern take of floral patterns is firmly demonstrated here, as she made this Peplum T-shirt top, and her sleeved sack dress. Both of which show the modern and contemporary side of using good old florals.

The skirted suit is a great two-piece and the only bit of formal tailoring in the collection. Smart but feminine, elegant and fun.

My three favourite outfits from the Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection

I love how uplifting, colourful and bright it is considering it is Winter Collection. A lot of A?W collections are very dark using colours such as black, brown, navy blue and dark green, not pastels such as lemon yellow, powder pink and baby blue.

I honestly think this designer is one to watch. Her keen eye for pattern and colour is so evident in each design she makes. Her sharp eye for clean cut tailoring is also very obvious, and very impressive.
